Viva Las Vegas: Nevada City Continues to Lead US in ASCs

Las Vegas may be better known as a vacation and gambling mecca, but it can also lay claim to a more healthcare-specific title: the U.S. city with the most Medicare-certified ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs).

Las Vegas had the most ASCs among U.S. cities in the first quarter of 2025, boasting 59 centers, according to new data from industry research and intelligence firm ASC Data. Las Vegas has been leading the pack in recent quarters, also at No. 1 in Q4 2025, with 58 ASCs.

Atlanta and Beverley Hills, California, tied for second place with 53 ASCs each, followed by Phoenix (45); San Antonio, Texas (43); Baltimore (34); Los Angeles; (33) Scottsdale, Arizona; (32) and Tucson, Arizona (31).

ASC Data’s report again highlighted the ASC industry’s strong preference for densely populated areas, noting that 91% of Medicare-certified ASCs have an urban – rather than rural – designation.

Among the specialties that are drawn to the “city of lights,” pain-management-focused ASCs are the most prevalent, numbering 21. Orthopedic ASCs are the next most common in Las Vegas, followed by “other,” a category that comprises general surgery, cardiology, trauma, neurosurgery, vascular, urology and pediatrics.

Overall, the report found that the Medicare-certified ASC segment continued to see robust growth in the early part of this year.

“The Medicare-certified segment remains strong, rising from 6,566 facilities in Q4 2025 to 6,611 centers by the end of Q1 2026,” Chris Schriever, co-founder and CEO of ASC Data, told Ambulatory Surgery Center News in an email.

The report noted that there are 10,664 total ASCs in the U.S., and the current ASC market value is $45.6 billion.

The balance of single-specialty ASCs to multi-specialty ASCs additionally continues to shift, the report suggests.

“We noted an uptick in single-specialty centers early this year, climbing from 3,376 to 3,415,” Schriever said. “Meanwhile, multi-specialty centers grew at a more modest pace, increasing from 3,190 to 3,196.”

On a percentage basis, single-specialty ASCs comprise 51.7% of the Medicare-certified centers, while multi-specialty facilities make up 48.3%.

Among single-speciality ASCs, the most common specialty is endoscopy, followed by ophthalmology. There are currently 2,080 Medicare-certified ASCs offering endoscopy surgery, a 46.6% increase since 2017. Ophthalmology has grown slower, with 2,174 Medicare-certified ASCs offering ophthalmologic surgery, up 3.7% since 2017.
