ASC Dealbook: Surgery Center of Conway Partners with AMSURG; Black Hills Plastic Surgery Joins Sanford Health

Surgery Center of Conway partners with AMSURG

Physician-owned Surgery Center of Conway and AMSURG have partnered to improve the ophthalmology and retina-focused ambulatory surgery services at the facility. 

The center in Conway, South Carolina, will use AMSURG’s operational, clinical and financial expertise to enhance its business while maintaining its culture of patient-centered care and physician clinical autonomy, according to a press release highlighting the partnership.  

Nashville, Tennessee-based AMSURG partners with physicians and health systems to strategically and operationally manage surgery centers. Ascension is currently in the process of acquiring the company.

The partnership was established based on advice from Physician Transaction Advisors. 

U.S. Urology Partners acquires New Jersey Urology assets

Nashville, Tennessee-based U.S. Urology Partners announced that New Jersey Urology’s central and southern regions are joining its urology services platform. With this affiliation, U.S. Urology Partners expands its geographic reach into a seventh state, now operating in more than 70 offices. 

“We are honored to welcome the New Jersey Urology central and south divisions and their highly respected care team to U.S. Urology Partners,” CEO Corina Tracy said in a press release. “For decades, New Jersey Urology has been well-known for its leadership in the region, providing high-quality, compassionate care in convenient locations across the state, along with expert clinical research capabilities.”

U.S. Urology Partners is a national urology practice-management platform that supports independent physician groups, many of which operate or are affiliated with urology-specific ASCs.

“We are proud to announce our new affiliation between the New Jersey Urology central and south divisions and U.S. Urology Partners,” Dr. Gordon A. Brown, director of New Jersey Urology’s Center for Advanced Therapeutics, said in the release. “This partnership will enable our urologists to continue providing exceptional, patient-centered care while gaining access to expanded clinical resources, operational support, and opportunities for ongoing growth and innovation.” 

Black Hills Plastic Surgery teams up with Sanford

Black Hills Plastic Surgery in Rapid City, South Dakota, is joining Sanford Health in the Black Hills region. The partnership is expected to be finalized by year’s end. 

Black Hills Plastic Surgery’s team consists of two board-certified physicians, an advanced practice provider and six staff members. All staff members are expected to join Sanford Health. 

The practice will remain at its current location, and operations will continue as usual for patients at this time. 

“We are excited to welcome the team at Black Hills Plastic Surgery to the Sanford Health family,” Kyle Wiese, president and CEO of Sanford Black Hills, said in a press release. “This partnership reinforces Sanford Health’s ongoing commitment to expanding comprehensive, world-class health care services tailored to meet the needs of patients across the Black Hills region.” 

Black Hills Plastic Surgery is the newest independent physician group in western South Dakota to become part of Sanford Health after completing its merger with Creekside Medical Clinic in August. 

Black Hills Orthopedic and Spine Center, Black Hills Surgical Hospital, Black Hills Urgent Care and Black Hills Surgery Center of Wyoming joined Sanford Health in November 2024.

Brown Gibbons Lang & Company advises the sale of Garden State Medical Center portfolio

Brown Gibbons Lang & Company (BGL), an independent investment bank and financial advisory firm, announced the sale of the Garden State Medical Center (GSMC) real estate portfolio, totaling about 46,000 rentable square feet in central and southern New Jersey, to a Scottsdale, Arizona-based real estate investment trust, Store Capital.

BGL’s health care real estate team acted as the adviser to the seller in the transaction. 

Founded in 2004, GSMC is among the largest physician-owned orthopedic and interventional pain practices at the Jersey Shore, specializing in orthopedic and spine surgery, interventional pain management, sports and regenerative medicine, and rheumatology. 

The portfolio includes seven practice locations across the state. The largest property, in Whiting, hosts Manchester Surgery Center, GSMC’s ambulatory surgery center. The ASC has four private operating rooms, four post-anesthesia care unit beds, four phase two recovery areas and two operating rooms. The multi-specialty ASC is designed for a variety of surgical specialties. 

Optum to acquire Acton Medical Associates

Atrius Health, a subsidiary of Optum based in Newton, Massachusetts, plans to acquire Acton Medical Associates, a primary care group with 45 providers serving the Boston area, according to a filing from the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission. 

Acton has 45 providers and cares for nearly 37,000 patients. Atrius was acquired by Optum in 2022 and now serves over 749,000 patients across 29 locations. 

The proposed acquisition still requires approval from state regulators. 

United Digestive partners with Gastro MD and Gastroenterology of Greater Orlando to expand GI care 

Atlanta-based United Digestive announced a partnership with Gastro MD and Gastroenterology of Greater Orlando, effective Oct. 3, expanding its footprint in Florida. 

Together, Gastro MD and Gastroenterology of Greater Orlando currently serve patients across six clinics and two ambulatory surgical centers in Tampa, the greater Orlando area, and Daytona. Through this partnership, United Digestive adds 32 providers to its growing network 

Gastro MD and Gastroenterology of Greater Orlando will continue to operate under their current brands. Their partnership with United Digestive is expected to support a physician-led, integrated approach to care across the region, provide advanced practice infrastructure, and reduce administrative burdens. 

United Digestive is a physician practice management organization serving GI physicians and gastroenterology practices across the Southeast with 66 clinics, 24 ASCs and more than 230 providers practicing in Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina. 

Duly Health and Care expands outpatient surgery access through acquisition

Duly Health and Care, through DuPage Medical Group Ltd., has acquired a minority ownership interest in Valley Ambulatory Surgery Center, in partnership with Surgery Partners. 

Valley ASC, located in St. Charles, Illinois, is a multispecialty surgery center offering advanced surgical care. The addition of Valley ASC builds on Duly’s growing network of ASCs, which includes locations in Westmont, Lombard and Naperville. 

The Duly Health and Care brand consists of more than 1,000 primary care and speciality care providers and over 6,000 team members across more than 150 locations. The brand includes three medical groups, DuPage medical Group Ltd., Quincy Medical Group and The South Bend Clinic LLC.
