Atrium Health is adding Carolina NeuroSurgery & Spine Associates (CNSA), a Charlotte-based practice with about 300 employees, 70 physicians and advanced practice providers, to its health system.

The integration will take effect in October.

“It’s a natural progression for us to engage in deeper collaboration with CNSA to address the evolving challenges and opportunities in modern health care,” Dr. Jennifer Sullivan, senior vice president at Atrium Health, said in a press release. “By combining our resources, we aim to elevate the care we provide, ensuring patients benefit not only from the exchange of knowledge but also from care provided by top-tier specialists close to home.”

The services CNSA offers range from nonoperative treatments and minimally invasive outpatient surgery to complex brain and spine procedures.

Established in 1940, CNSA is one of the largest neurosurgical practices in the country, with nine sites across the Carolinas.

Atrium Health, part of Advocate Health, is the nation’s third-largest nonprofit health system, serving more than six million patients annually across 68 hospitals and over 1,000 care sites.

Atrium and CNSA have a history of partnership. In 2021, they launched SpineFirst, a joint initiative focused on expanding access to spine care, including minimally invasive procedures in the outpatient setting.

They also co-own the Carolina Center for Specialty Surgery.

“We are advancing our partnership to better meet the needs of our community,” Dr. Mark Smith, president of CNSA, said in a press release. “With Atrium Health’s state-of-the-art facilities and comprehensive support services, we remain committed to providing compassionate, family-centered care. By combining our expertise, we will strengthen surgical and nonsurgical care for neurosurgery and spine patients and their families in our community.”
