Joint & Spine Center at Powers Health launches

Powers Health and Orthopedic Specialists of Northwest Indiana (OSNI) have opened a new orthopedic ambulatory surgery center (ASC) in Crown Point.

The 11,000-square-foot facility will offer procedures ranging from hip and knee replacements to minimally invasive spine operations and robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery. The center also provides treatment for shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, and foot and ankle conditions.

“I know that when patients come here for joint replacements, spine procedures or treatment of other joint injuries, they will appreciate the convenience and efficiency of the center,” Dr. Michael Knesek said in a press release. “Our goal is to get patients moving again.”

The facility includes two surgical suites, a minor procedures room, eight pre-operative holding rooms, a post-operative recovery area with a private exit, and a full sterile corridor and processing department. Design features such as radiant heating panels and linear diffusers for airflow control were added for patient comfort and infection prevention, according to the release.

“We are proud that this center is supported by experienced, board-certified orthopedic surgeons,” Janice Ryba, CEO of Powers Health’s St. Mary Medical Center, said in the press release. “More than just restoring mobility, we are improving the quality of life for our patients.”

Slocum’s new ASC set for Spring 2027

Slocum Orthopedics will break ground in September on a new 34,000-square-foot ambulatory surgery center in Eugene, Oregon. The center is scheduled to open in Spring 2027.

The facility will include eight operating rooms and be equipped to support 23-hour overnight stays. Slocum projected the new site will accommodate 8,000 to 9,000 surgeries annually, expanding on the roughly 12,000 surgeries its surgeons already perform each year across existing facilities and local hospitals.

“Anybody who has interfaced in the health care system in the last two years, whether you’re waiting six hours in an ER, waiting four months for elective surgery, knows that the health care system is under stress,” Brian Jewett, president of Slocum Orthopedics, said in a press release.

Russell Roll, director at Slocum, said the expansion is a response to patient demand.

“We’re currently performing close to 12,000 surgeries a year through our surgeons. That is across our surgery center here as well as some of our local hospitals,” Roll said.

The new surgery center will provide additional capacity for orthopedic procedures while alleviating scheduling delays for patients in the region.

Catholic Health opens Ambulatory & Urgent Care at Melville

Catholic Health has opened its new Ambulatory & Urgent Care at Melville, a 13,000-square-foot, approximately $7 million facility that expands access to outpatient health care services for communities along the Nassau/Suffolk County border in New York.

The site offers both primary and specialty care, including the nationally recognized cardiovascular services of St. Francis Heart Center, along with walk-in urgent care for patients with immediate needs. The facility is designed to provide comprehensive services in one location to meet growing demand for convenient, high-quality outpatient care.

“As our patients’ needs and preferences continue to evolve, we are committed to meeting them where they are,” Patrick O’Shaughnessy, DO, MBA, president and CEO of Catholic Health, said in a press release.

The new Melville center is the latest addition to Catholic Health’s expanding network of multispecialty care centers across Long Island.

Graham Health System breaks ground on $5.1M ASC

Graham Health System has broken ground on a new ASC in Galesburg, Illinois, after a $5.1 million facility investment.

The center will feature two operating rooms and 15 pre- and post-surgical bays, offering general surgery, GI, OB/GYN, pain management, ENT (adult and pediatric), urology, family planning, vascular and podiatry specialties that are currently limited or unavailable in the Galesburg area. It is expected to perform more than 1,900 surgical procedures in its first year.

“This project is a direct response to the needs of the Galesburg community following the closure of Cottage Hospital in 2022,” Bob Senneff, CEO of Graham Health System, said in a press release. “The number of outpatient procedures in the Galesburg market have decreased on an annual basis over 65% since 2013. Our goal is to bring that care back to this market, to keep folks here in town.”

Since entering the Galesburg market in 2022, Graham has opened four clinics, including one on the historically underserved south side of the city, along with a full-service imaging center and comprehensive endoscopy suite.

“We’re not just breaking ground on another building,” Senneff said. “We’re building a stronger, healthier community and a brighter future for Galesburg and all of Knox County.”

The ASC is scheduled to be fully operational by September 2026, with CRNA coverage secured and recruitment for an anesthesiologist underway.

Rutherford County gains first dedicated orthopaedic ASC

Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance (TOA), in partnership with Ascension Saint Thomas and United Surgical Partners International (USPI), has opened the Westlawn Surgery Center, the first dedicated orthopaedic ASC in Rutherford County.

The 13,000-square-foot facility is located on the top floor of TOA’s building in Murfreesboro’s growing Westlawn community. It includes three surgical suites, pre-op and recovery areas, and advanced imaging and surgical technology. Designed to provide convenient, cost-effective, and patient-centered care, the center will expand access to outpatient surgical services across the region.

“We’re proud to expand in Murfreesboro, delivering our full spectrum of advanced orthopedic specialty care to the growing Westlawn community,” Rob Simmons, CEO of Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance, told local news. “Our team is committed to helping patients get back to the life they love, and this new center allows us to do that more efficiently and effectively, all in one location.”

The facility opened with a community event on August 14.

“Partnering with physicians and expanding access to high-quality health care is core to strengthening health care infrastructure in the communities we serve,” said Fahad Tahir, president and CEO of Ascension Saint Thomas. “This new collaboration with Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance and USPI reflects our shared commitment to delivering exceptional care through partnerships. Together at Westlawn, we’re going beyond hospitals to surgery centers and a comprehensive system of care while building a stronger, more connected healthcare experience for Rutherford County and the surrounding region.”

Sutter Amador Surgery Center to close

The Sutter Amador Surgery Center in Jackson, California, will close on Oct. 3, raising concerns among Amador County residents about access to local health care services.

Sutter Health, which operates the facility, said patients would continue to have access to services at nearby Sutter Amador Hospital in Jackson.

A spokesperson told local news that the hospital can perform all of the procedures currently offered at the surgery center.
