Corewell Health’s new surgery center in Royal Oak
Corewell Health has begun construction on a new $75 million ambulatory surgery center (ASC) and medical office building in Royal Oak, Michigan. The 89,000-square-foot facility, called the Corewell Health Care Center, is expected to be completed in 2027 after an 18- to 24-month construction.
The project will include a surgery center designed for low-complexity outpatient procedures such as orthopaedic, low-risk spine, gallbladder, appendix, and ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeries. The ASC will feature four operating rooms and one procedure room. The facility will also offer medical office space, including primary care, behavioral health and digestive health.
“We’re really trying to create new access, because the population is aging and we have more and more good therapies for conditions,” Dr. Daniel Carey, president of William Beaumont University Hospital, said in a press release. “So we’re expanding access at this site.”
Lamont Yoder, president of Corewell Health East, said the new site will allow the system to serve an additional 20,000 people annually.
“This new care center represents not only incredible growth for our health care system, but also improved access to better care close to home for Royal Oak and our entire region,” he said.
MaineHealth invests in orthopedic hub with new ASC in South Portland
MaineHealth is moving ahead with plans to create a consolidated orthopedic hub in South Portland, backed by an estimated $70 million investment.
The project includes renovations at 300 Southborough Drive, a three-story, 122,000-square-foot office building the system recently purchased for $20 million, as well as construction of a new ambulatory surgery center on the site.
The 14,000-square-foot MaineHealth Orthopedic Surgery Center will feature four operating rooms, two procedure rooms, 16 pre- and post-op bays, and on-site sterile processing. It is designed to expand outpatient surgical capacity, streamline processes and handle a higher volume of orthopedic procedures.
“The building allows us to bring those clinical practices together to create a consolidated hub for orthopedics,” MaineHealth COO Kelly Elkins told local news. “And the property is large enough that we’re also able to build a freestanding orthopedic center.”
MaineHealth plans to begin construction on the surgery center by late 2025 and open it in early 2027. Renovations on the existing building, which will house specialty practices and support services, are expected to start in 2026. The hub is intended to co-locate clinics, imaging, physical therapy and sub-specialties that are currently spread across the Portland area.
Watson Clinic expands with new ASC and medical office building on Orlando Health campus
Florida-based Watson Clinic is adding two new facilities in south Lakeland.
The expansion includes the Watson Clinic Parkway Medical Center, which will be an 80,000-square-foot, four-story facility that will house specialists across urology, orthopaedic surgery, general surgery, OB-GYN, gynecologic oncology and more.
The building will also feature on-site radiology imaging, laboratory testing, self-check-in kiosks and expanded waiting areas, Watson Clinic said in a press release.
Another addition is the Watson Clinic Surgery Center South, a new ASC with six operating rooms, 20 pre- and post-holding bays, and six post-anesthesia care units. The facility is designed to expand the range of outpatient procedures Watson Clinic already provides at its existing Lakeland location.
“Watson Clinic is excited to expand our presence on the new campus in order to serve the healthcare needs of our growing community,” Watson Clinic CEO Jason Hirsbrunner said in the announcement. “These two new facilities will provide our current patients and all area residents with additional access to exceptional healthcare and, in the process, it will also bring more job opportunities to Polk County.”
The new facilities will operate exclusively under Watson Clinic, alongside the previously announced Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital, which will include 69 emergency and observational beds, 11 operating rooms, and 18 intensive care units. The campus is scheduled to open in summer 2026.
Millard Fillmore Surgery Center to close
Millard Fillmore Surgery Center in Buffalo, New York, will shut down on Oct. 1 after more than three decades of operation. The facility, which opened in 1989, is part of Kaleida Health.
In a statement, Kaleida said the closure was driven by financial pressures.
“This decision, while difficult, reflects changes in funding and reimbursement, financial sustainability of this location, and access to similar services in the community,” Kaleida Health wrote. “We are extremely proud of the high-quality care that the center’s staff and physicians have provided over the years.”
The health system said it is working with the 32 employees affected to help them find new roles.
“We remain committed to ensuring patients have access to the care they need and are working to coordinate a smooth transition of care,” Kaleida Health wrote. “Human Resources is working closely with the 32 impacted employees to connect them with other opportunities. Physicians who work at the surgery center will continue to perform cases in our hospitals and other outpatient surgery centers.”
