As ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) increasingly adopt robotic-assisted platforms to expand their capabilities in minimally invasive procedures, Intuitive Surgical (Nasdaq: ISRG), the maker of the da Vinci system, has announced a major leadership transition.

President Dave Rosa will take over as CEO on July 1, 2025, succeeding longtime CEO Gary Guthart, who will move into the role of executive chair.

The da Vinci surgical system is widely used across hospitals and a growing number of ASCs, supporting a range of specialties including urology, gynecology, general surgery and thoracic procedures.

It is the most popular soft-tissue robotic surgery platform in the U.S., and can cost between $1 million and $2.5 million, depending on the model and configuration. Intuitive reported revenue growth of $8.35 billion in 2024, and placed 493 da Vinci surgical systems in Q4 2024, of which 174 were the da Vinci 5 system.

Rosa has been with Intuitive for 29 years, and he was the company’s ninth employee. According to Intuitive, he played a key role in developing the company’s single-port da Vinci SP and Ion robotic bronchoscopy platforms, and has served as president and board director since 2023.

Guthart, who has led the company for 15 years, said Rosa is“uniquely qualified” to lead the business forward.

“Having worked closely with Dave for decades, I am confident that his patients-first focus and deep capability in guiding Intuitive’s strategy, our designs, our product and service quality, and our operational excellence make him uniquely qualified to lead our business forward,” Guthart said.

Rosa said he plans to build on the company’s work toward advancing the “Quintuple Aim.”

“We are at an exciting time with a significant opportunity to advance the work that customers care most about – the Quintuple Aim – improving patient outcomes, enhancing patient and care team experience, expanding patient access to care, and ultimately lowering the total cost to treat,” Rosa said. “I look forward to building on this work alongside the entire Intuitive team to deliver on these goals and drive value for all our stakeholders.”

The announcement comes as Intuitive marks its 30th anniversary and approaches 17 million da Vinci procedures performed globally.
