Cleveland Clinic Main Campus | Cleveland Clinic photoCleveland Clinic – a health system known for being a pioneer in heart surgery and innovations in minimally invasive procedures – is teaming up with ambulatory surgery center (ASC) operator Regent Surgical.
On May 7, Cleveland Clinic and Regent announced the pair are partnering to enhance access to surgical care for patients in the health system’s U.S. markets. The partnership will focus on developing ASCs while streamlining Cleveland Clinic’s outpatient care delivery capabilities.
“Ambulatory surgery centers provide an important setting for health systems to expand access to surgeries, and to be more efficient in the delivery of services,” Cleveland Clinic CEO and President Dr. Tom Mihaljevic said in a statement. “Regent’s capabilities in managing and operating ambulatory surgery centers will enable us to focus on continuing to provide the highest quality care for our patients, and will enhance our ability to grow and offer that care to more patients.”
The nonprofit Cleveland Clinic is a multispecialty academic medical center and research hub. Among Cleveland Clinic’s 82,600 employees worldwide are more than 5,786 salaried physicians and researchers, plus 20,700 registered nurses and advanced practice providers, across 140 medical specialties and subspecialties.
Overall, the system has 280 outpatient facilities. In 2024, Cleveland Clinic recorded 15.7 million outpatient encounters, 333,000 hospital admissions and observations, and 320,000 surgeries and procedures.
The Franklin, Tennessee-based Regent Surgical operates and manages ASC locations in partnership with health systems across 13 states.
“We’re proud to partner with Cleveland Clinic to deliver long-term value for patients, physicians and the communities they serve,” Travis Messina, CEO of Regent, said in a statement. “Together, we will create accessible, patient-centered surgical environments that emphasize both clinical excellence and compassionate care.”
Cleveland Clinic will be the majority owner of the joint venture with Regent and will have branding on all ASCs, the May 7 announcement noted.
The partnership with Regent is just one of Cleveland Clinic’s several innovative JVs.
In 2019, Cleveland Clinic and Amwell partnered on what they described as a first-of-its-kind initiative to provide greater access to comprehensive and high-acuity care services via telehealth.
Cleveland Clinic last year likewise announced a partnership with Amazon’s One Medical.
For Regent, the JV with Cleveland Clinic is at least its second major partnership announcement of 2025. In February, Mass General Brigham shared that it’s working with Regent to expand its ASC capabilities across the New England market.
