Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist opens $78M outpatient surgery center in Winston-Salem
Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist opened a $78 million outpatient surgery center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The 55,000-square-foot facility includes 12 surgical suites, eight operating rooms, two procedure rooms, a simulation OR and a robotic-surgery training room. The latter two spaces will support the health system’s academic mission by advancing training for future surgeons and health care professionals.
“This new facility will allow us to better provide the high-quality care, along with increased, convenient access, that our community needs and deserves,” David Zaas, president of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, said in a press release.
Set to begin treating patients in early May, the center is designed for complex outpatient procedures, with extended recovery capabilities for patients requiring additional monitoring before discharge. The facility offers specialties including general surgery, otolaryngology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, and urology.
“We know that patients generally do not want to go to a hospital if they can receive care in a more patient-friendly outpatient setting,” Zaas said. “This facility will help us take another important step in our commitment to increase access to high-quality care.”

Sutter Health unveiled plans for a 120,000-square-foot orthopedic and sports medicine center in Sacramento, which will include an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) focused on minimally invasive orthopedic procedures, alongside advanced diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation, sports psychology and nutrition counseling.
“This complex represents an unparalleled opportunity to deliver comprehensive, specialized orthopedics and sports medicine,” Dr. Todd Smith, orthopedic surgeon and Sutter’s chief physician executive, told local news. “Our teams will provide the care needed by everyone from everyday athletes to ‘weekend warriors.’”
The facility will also serve as a clinical trial site and training hub for graduate medical education. Sutter plans to hire over 30 new clinicians and relocate 15 existing providers to the new location.

Cleveland Clinic’s Cole Eye Institute doubles in size with new outpatient pavilion
Cleveland Clinic expanded its Cole Eye Institute with a 150,000-square-foot outpatient facility, which doubles the size of the institute’s footprint and significantly enhances its surgical and diagnostic capabilities.
The new four-story pavilion, designed by HGA in collaboration with Bostwick Design Partnership, opened to patients on Feb. 24, 2025. The expansion includes an ophthalmic surgery center with eight operating rooms, three refractive surgery procedure rooms and 60 outpatient eye exam rooms. It also offers advanced diagnostic imaging and supports clinical care for a wide range of eye diseases.
“The building design was conceptualized around a team-based operating model to improve patient access, increase clinical and research capabilities, and enhance the human experience for patients and staff,” Jim Medinger, project manager at HGA, said in a statement.
In addition to surgical and exam areas, the pavilion includes space for education, research and administrative offices. HGA is also leading the next phase of the project, a renovation of the existing Cole Eye Institute, which houses pediatric care and eye imaging, which is expected to wrap up by the end of 2025.
United Hospital Center breaks ground on $48M outpatient surgery center
WVU Medicine United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, West Virginia, is set to expand surgical access with a new $48 million outpatient surgery center scheduled for completion in December 2026.
The 48,000-square-foot facility will add eight new operating rooms, increasing UHC’s total OR count from 16 to 24. The expanded capacity will allow the hospital to perform an additional 40 to 50 outpatient surgeries per week, with a focus on orthopedic procedures but capacity for multiple specialties.
“We’ll have more capacity and room, and the doctors will get a little more space and operating room time,” Dr. David Hess, UHC president and CEO, said in a press release. “We think it’s going to help access to care for all service lines, not only the ones operating in the new surgery center.”
According to Hess, the outpatient model is ideal for low-risk orthopedic surgeries, which make up a large portion of UHC’s case volume. The new facility is also expected to improve physician recruitment and retention by providing more modern amenities and flexible surgical scheduling.
“We’re recruiting talented physicians who have a passion for treating patients in a rural setting in their own communities,” Hess said. “We want to make sure that folks in every part of our region and state have access to elite surgeons and physicians so they don’t have to leave their communities.”
The Bridgeport project is part of a larger $460 million capital investment across the WVU Health System, spanning seven hospital projects in five counties and aimed at expanding care access across West Virginia.
