NYU Langone Health has expanded its orthopedic care network with the acquisition of Rothman Orthopaedics of Greater New York. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The move integrates three new practice locations into NYU Langone Orthopedics’ extensive outpatient system, further solidifying its reputation for excellence in patient care, education and research.
The new locations – NYU Langone Orthopedic Associates in Midtown East, NYU Langone Medical Associates in Harrison and NYU Langone Medical Associates in Tarrytown – offer imaging capabilities to enhance diagnostic and treatment services. These facilities join NYU Langone’s existing network of more than 300 outpatient sites.
“We’re thrilled to welcome the patients and staff from Rothman Orthopaedics of Greater New York to the NYU Langone network,” Andrew Rubin, senior vice president for clinical affairs and ambulatory care at NYU Langone, said in a press release. “This acquisition furthers our mission of providing the highest level of orthopedic care to our patients in the communities where they live and work, ultimately making it easier for them to access integrated, comprehensive, patient-centered care.”
The acquisition brings 13 orthopedic specialists and surgeons from Rothman Orthopaedics into the NYU Langone Orthopedics team. These professionals specialize in areas such as sports medicine, spine care, joint health and rehabilitation medicine, broadening the expertise available to patients.
“We’ve had a long-standing relationship with the team at Rothman Orthopaedics, and now that they have officially joined our faculty, we can bring the same great orthopedic care to even more people in the New York metro area,” Dr. Joseph D. Zuckerman, chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, said in a press release. “NYU Langone Orthopedics is a world-class leader in orthopedic care and academic medicine, and we are thrilled to be able to change more people’s lives for the better with this new venture.”
NYU Langone Orthopedics surgeons perform over 34,000 procedures annually, and the institution trains more orthopedic surgeons than any other in the United States.

OrthoIndy to Merge with Evansville and Fort Wayne Practices, Forming OrthoIndiana
OrthoIndy, an orthopedic practice in Indianapolis, has announced plans to merge with Tri-State Orthopaedics in Evansville and Fort Wayne Orthopedics. The merger will result in the creation of OrthoIndiana, a statewide network aimed at providing comprehensive orthopedic care across Indiana.
The transition is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
Once finalized, OrthoIndiana will operate 39 locations throughout the state, supported by 160 physicians and more than 1,800 employees. This merger will make OrthoIndiana one of the 10 largest independent orthopedic practices in the nation.
The merger is a response to mounting challenges for independent health care practices, Dr. Ed Hellman, president of OrthoIndy, told local news.
“Every year, we see reductions in reimbursements for what we do, for professional services. Every year, we see increasing pressures in terms of documentation, in terms of regulation that increase our overall expenses,” he said. “The result of this is that margins are really squeezed from both ends.”
The consolidation aims to counter these pressures by fostering innovation, enabling direct-to-employer contracting, and implementing value-based care strategies, Hellman told local news.
By joining forces, the practices intend to maintain their independence while achieving the scale and geographic footprint necessary to sustain operations in a competitive health care environment.
“When we decided that we wanted to remain independent, but we needed scale and we needed a better geographic footprint, we then turned to seeking out other like-minded physician practices that also wanted to remain independent, … and really wanted to remain in control of their own destiny,” John Ryan, CEO of OrthoIndy, told local news.
Under the OrthoIndiana umbrella, the three practices will retain their individual clinical operations, names and branding to preserve their local focus. They will also maintain their respective boards of directors while creating a shared board to guide OrthoIndiana’s overarching strategy.
The merger will not result in any job cuts, with OrthoIndy employing 1,250 people, Fort Wayne Orthopedics employing 240, and Tri-State Orthopaedics employing 221. Patients will experience no changes to the services they currently receive.
