OrthoCarolina has acquired Matthews Surgery Center from health care network Novant Health.

Financial terms of the deal – made official on Oct. 1 – were not disclosed. OrthoCarolina will now own, operate and manage the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) moving forward.

“We deeply value our longstanding relationship with Novant Health, whose collaboration has helped ensure access to high-quality, affordable care for our patients,” OrthoCarolina Chief Administrative Officer Bob Raspa said in a press release.

OrthoCarolina specializes in foot and ankle, hip and knee, hand, spine, physical medicine, pediatric orthopedics, shoulder and elbow, and sports medicine. The organization has a network of 40 occasions and seven orthopedic urgent care centers across North and South Carolina.

“This acquisition reflects our shared commitment to enhancing patient outcomes and expanding cost-effective health care options throughout the region, and we appreciate Novant’s role in helping us reach this milestone,” Raspa continued.

Novant Health is an integrated network of more than 850 locations, including 19 hospitals, more than 700 physician clinics and urgent care centers, outpatient facilities, and imaging and pharmacy services.

Meanwhile, Matthews Surgery Center is a specialized facility dedicated to orthopedic surgery and pain management for adult and pediatric patients. The ASC has two operating suites and one procedure room, according to the press release.

The acquisition of Matthews Surgery Center represents OrthoCarolina’s second fully owned ambulatory surgery center. The other is the Mallard Creek Surgery Center out of its facility in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“Ambulatory surgery centers offer patients significant advantages over traditional hospital settings, including greater convenience and comfort, highly specialized care and reduced costs,” OrthoCarolina CEO Dr. Leo Spector said in the press release. “Acquiring Matthews Surgery Center is a strategic step in our commitment to expanding access to high-quality orthopedic care for patients throughout our footprint.”
