Sutter Health, a not-for-profit health care system based in California, has announced a $380 million investment to establish a new cancer center in Modesto, a part of which will be a new ambulatory surgery center (ASC).
Sutter Health operates hospitals, medical groups, urgent care clinics and serves nearly 3.5 million patients. The ASC, which will be completed by 2029, will be equipped with four operating rooms, four procedure rooms and space for future expansion.
Additionally, the center will host over 25 clinicians in its outpatient clinics and plans to recruit 44 new physicians.
“We’re making meaningful progress in expanding access to the specialized care that our communities need,” Warner Thomas, president and CEO of Sutter Health, said in a press release. “This investment — one of our biggest yet — is all about meeting the real needs of people in the Central Valley. We’re thrilled to be working alongside our physician partners to bring top-notch cancer care and surgical services to Modesto in this new, state-of-the-art facility.”
Currently, Sutter operates a total of 37 ASCs spread across 18 counties.
These centers provide a wide range of outpatient surgical procedures, including knee replacements, cataract surgeries, and various other same-day surgeries that allow patients to recover at home instead of in a hospital.
“Sutter is committed to addressing the health care access challenges facing patients in California,” Sutter Surgery Center Division CEO Brad Heaton previously said in an interview with ASC News. “We’re investing significantly in new and enhanced care facilities and services across all areas, including ambulatory surgery.”
Sutter also announced it plans to grow its Graduate Medical Education programs to train 1,000 physician residents and fellows each year by 2030 and create more academic partnerships.
