Commons Clinic has invested $9.75 million in Marina Orthopedic & Spine Institute (MOSI), expanding its ambulatory surgery center (ASC) network and growing its capabilities by launching Theater, a proprietary surgical care platform.
It is estimated that by 2028, 85% of health care procedures will be carried out in outpatient settings. Innovation, unique partnerships and new product launches will drive this growth.
ASCs increasingly perform complex musculoskeletal procedures at 35% to 50% lower costs than hospitals, while maintaining high safety and effectiveness standards. Additionally, patients report better experiences and outcomes when treated at ASCs.
Orthopedic care provided in hospitals can be expensive, ranging from $95,600 to $221,000. Despite the trend toward ambulatory care, the vast majority of expenses related to spinal surgery in Los Angeles are still concentrated in hospitals.
This has resulted in a trend of uncontrollable costs, making it financially challenging for patients, according to an analysis of commercial claims data done by Commons in partnership with the actuarial firm Accorded.
Commons Clinic is a Los Angeles-based all-inclusive ASC focusing on affordable, accessible and effective orthopedic care. It boasts transparent, bundled pricing to help patients make informed decisions, knowing the cost of all services associated with their surgery upfront.
MOSI operates with an integrated, team-based approach that ensures treatments are evaluated and approved by physicians with diverse specialties working together. This approach aims to provide greater precision and faster recovery times.
Theater is a surgical platform that combines modern technology, specialized operating suites and precision surgical pathways. It is designed to streamline processes and improve productivity in orthopedic clinics, benefiting clinicians, nurses and administrators.
The platform includes vertically specialized operating rooms (ORs) customized to meet the needs of subspecialty care programs, such as spine treatment, joint replacements, cardiology and more. It also connects advanced surgical products, such as robotics, imaging, and endoscopy, to create scalable, tailored OR solutions that drive increased case complexity and efficiency.
Additionally, proprietary care algorithms leverage real-world evidence to optimize procedure selection and planning, implant and hardware usage, and high-impact enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols.
Commons plans to expand Theater and implement it in dozens of hyper-specialized surgery centers nationwide by 2026.
“We developed Theater to harness and rapidly scale breakthroughs by physician innovators across Commons’ national facility network,” Nick Aubin, CEO and co-founder of Commons Clinic, said in a statement. “We believe that advancing ambulatory care is foundational to rebuilding community health care infrastructure, reducing reliance on high-cost hospital systems, and using technology to achieve health care’s quadruple aim.”
This new platform and surgery center investment adds advanced facility capabilities to Commons’ specialty care network, strengthening in-person treatment and attracting leading orthopedic surgeons and physicians.
